SETI is the Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence
and is primarily
invovled with monitoring space for radio transmissions. They do this
with the hope of
discovering a transmission from another planet thus confirming the
existence of an extraterrestrail civilization. However analyzing all
that data is a daunting task. They solve this problem and crunch their
data using computer power donated from
users all over the world by letting interested users
install client software (often a screen saver) that retrieves and
processes blocks when the computer it not in use. This project is
called SETI@home.
The result is lots of people and organizations participating in
crunching
SETI units and many competing for how many they can do. It's fun and
includes the possibility of being a part of potentially
ground breaking discoveries.

Sliced Apple
*
SETI has recent ended this phase of the project and no longer using
SETI@home to process data, instead they are working to analyze the data
that was processed over the past 20 years. So the SlicedApple SETI team
is on a, possibly permanent, sabbatical.
I have been a SETI follower for some time and have been running the
various incarnations of SETI@home since its first release. In mid 2006
I setup a SETI team for the Sliced Apple. At present there are only a
few members since I negleted to post a public link for joining the team
until December 26th, 2006, but I would love anyone interested to join
up. If you are already registered to crunch SETI untis and would like
to throw
your units into the SlicedApple pot then join
Team SlicedApple.
If you are not a member of SET@home you must first download the
neccessary client software (it's all free) and sign up with SETI@home
before you can join a team. Visit
SETI@home for
more information on how
to do that.
